Further sackings in 24 January brought the total number of people dismissed to nearly 400.〔(eMelburne encyclopedia 'Black Wednesday' )〕 Payments were eventually approved in March 1879, and most of those who were dismissed, were subsequently reinstated.〔Alfred Deakin, 'The crisis in Victorian Politics, 1879-1881', Melbourne University Press, Melbourne, 1957.〕 ==References==
